Automobile production in Mexico increased 15.2% at an annual rate in May
Automobile production in May reached 275 thousand 436 vehicles, and exports reached 244 thousand 643 units.
Mexico's automobile production and exports increased in May compared to the same month last year, data from the National Statistics Institute (Inegi) showed on Monday. Production increased 15.22% in April, totaling 275,436 vehicles, and exports increased by 1.08%, totaling 244,643 units in May, data from the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry showed.
In the first five months of 2022, automobile production increased by 3.5% compared to the same period last year, with a total of 1,376,281,000 vehicles manufactured in the country, of which 79.9% are light trucks.
However, in the same period, the export of light automobiles had a slight drop of 0.28%, compared to the first five months of 2021. From January to May 2022, 1,166,921 vehicles and light trucks were exported, while in the same period last year exports reached 1,170,243 cars.
So far this year, March was the month with the highest car production, with 305,979 units. In the domestic market, 91,215 units were sold in May, representing an increase of 5.2% over the same month last year.
The information from the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry comes from the 22 companies affiliated with the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA), Giant Motors Latin America, and Autos Orientales Picacho. These companies register the sales of vehicles of each of the 35 corresponding makes and models produced and marketed in Mexico.
