Azcárraga Carries the Weight of Mexican Equestrian Hopes

Andrés Azcárraga Rivera Torres qualified for the individual equestrian jumping final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after a flawless performance. His teammates, unfortunately, didn't make the cut. Azcárraga now faces tough competition but carries the hopes of Mexico on his shoulders.

The Mexican duo Andrés Azcárraga Rivera Torres (Contendros 2) qualified for the individual equestrian jumping final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after placing 18th out of 30 who advanced in the general classification with a course without penalties and a time of 77.21 seconds.

For his part, Eugenio Garza Pérez (Contago) was eliminated after placing 40th with four penalties and a time of 77.02 seconds, while Federico Fernández Senderos (Romeo) finished 49th with eight penalties and 76.58 seconds.

Azcárraga was on the list of 20 riders who did not commit any penalties, in total, 30 were those who advanced to the grand final in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles that will take place on August 6 at 02:00 hours central time Mexico.

Each participant will have a turn on the course, with a tiebreaker to determine the winners in case of a tie in the penalty shootout.

Among the riders who will fight for the Olympic medals are the current British champion Ben Maher, the Olympic champion of London 2012, Steve Guerdat of Switzerland and the world number one Henrik von Eckermann of Sweden.

This is the first participation for Andrés Azcárraga in a summer competition, he has been part of the jumping team that qualified for Paris 2024 after the fourth place achieved at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, as well as more recently the silver medal for teams at the World Equestrian Festival this year in Germany.
