Kidnapped in Paradise: One Man Executed, Another Battered and Found Alive in Akumal

One man executed and another found alive after a kidnapping in Akumal, shaking the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

AKUMAL, Mexico — Violence has once again shattered the peace along the Riviera Maya tourist corridor after two men were kidnapped in Akumal and dumped in separate locations — one executed, the other battered but alive.

The nightmare began sometime Friday night when both men were grabbed in Akumal, a popular turtle-nesting beach town south of Playa del Carmen. Around 8 a.m. Saturday, motorists spotted a body on the shoulder of federal highway 307 near the Akumal access road. The victim showed clear signs of violence, and the area was quickly cordoned off by ministerial authorities.

Around noon, a second man was found injured in the Uxuxubi area, beaten and disoriented. He was rushed to the IMSS-Bienestar Hospital in Tulum, where he told authorities that both he and the deceased had been kidnapped the previous night.

Investigators believe the two men knew each other and were allegedly linked to narcomenudeo — small-scale drug dealing — though the investigation is ongoing. The state prosecutor's office is working to determine the motive and identify the kidnappers.

The 307 highway corridor connecting Cancún to Tulum has become a dumping ground for cartel-related violence in recent years. While Quintana Roo's tourist zones are generally safe for visitors, the road running through them tells a different story — one of territorial disputes between local cells fighting over the lucrative street-level drug trade that caters to tourists and locals alike.

Akumal itself is better known for its sea turtle population than for crime scenes. But the town sits on a corridor that has seen a steady trickle of violent incidents as criminal groups battle for control of the drug trade in the region. For travelers, the takeaway is straightforward: the beaches and resorts remain safe, but the highway after dark is a different world.
