Under the guidance of coach Abel Vargas Valencia, the Mexican boxing team continues with its last stage of preparation in the city of Mulhouse, France, before stepping into the ring for the Paris 2024 Games.

“The work began before the qualification of the men and the work continued with the team that participated in the qualifiers, finishing that stage and knowing who will participate in the Olympic Games, we enter a direct period of competition, and we will arrive in good shape to the summer competition,” said Vargas Valencia.

Together with the head coach is his technical staff integrated by Radamés Hernández Cázares, Gerardo Marrón Rodríguez and Brenda Lorena Jiménez Cruz, who will concentrate for a week and then travel next July 21 to the French capital.

“The expectation we generated and formed was the physical, technical and tactical preparation in which I consider we are doing well, we have been able to adapt our fighters to Olympic style boxing, which is going to allow us to have a good performance and advance little by little, that is, fight after fight and minute after minute in the three rounds of combat,” he detailed.

Mexican fighters Marco Verde and Miguel Angel Martinez, who will fight for an Olympic medal, got their quota after reaching the finals in the last Pan American Games Santiago 2023, while Fatima Herrera and Citlalli Ortiz did the same after advancing to the quarterfinals in the second World Qualifier of the specialty held in Bangkok, Thailand.

“We have participated in a camp in Europe before the world qualifiers where fortunately Citlalli Ortiz and Fatima Herrera qualified, before them Miguel Angel Martinez and Marco Verde qualified in the Pan American Games,” added Abel Vargas.

The trainer, who attended the past Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as a Mexican delegate, also highlighted the strengths of each of his pupils, “the four are different and represent what Mexican boxing is, they have a lot of desire and definite will”.

“Marco Verde is technical and in whatever field he has to fight he does very well against any opponent; Miguel Martinez is very skillful and hits very hard, he also has an unbreakable will; Citlalli Ortiz represents the Mexican woman because she is mischievous, cheerful, she moves, hits and I like her boxing too much; Fatima Herrera is also very warrior, strong and serious, she is the one I can say you have to be careful with”, he added.

The boxing will take place from July 27 to August 10 at the Paris Nord Arena in Villepinte and the Roland-Garros Stadium.
