Mexican divers Aranza Vázquez and Alejandra Estudillo advance to the women's springboard semifinals in Paris 2024. Estudillo overcomes nerves to reach the final, securing a historic bronze medal for Mexico.
Mexican divers Aranza Vázquez Montaño and Alejandra Estudillo Torres advanced to the semifinals of the women's individual springboard event on Wednesday by finishing among the 18 best divers at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after occupying positions 3 and 17, respectively, in a test held at the Aquatic Center of the French capital.
The Mexicans finished with scores of 321.75 and 276.45, while China's Yiwen Chen and Australia's Maddison Keeney led the competition with 356.40 and 337.35 points, respectively.
"I felt very good in the competition, I was calm since I started warming up this morning. I know I had a good competition, we will continue with what is coming up, like the semi-final, and from there we will see if we go to the final if everything goes well, but there are things that can be done better, and in the end, I represent Mexico with great pride, that the stands are full of Mexicans feels incredible,” said Aranza Vázquez, who is experiencing her second Olympic Games.
For her part, Alejandra Estudillo acknowledged that nerves were part of her Olympic debut; however, she shared, they were a motivation to get through the competition and get her ticket to the next round.
“I was very nervous honestly because it is my first time competing in the Olympic Games, but I tried to be as calm as I could and give my best effort and thank God I took another step; I go step by step, I tried to let those nerves give me the motivation and the adrenaline to feel because that helps me to be clearer about what I have to do with the simple fact of being here I am happy and grateful, I give my best effort and I trained to be ready,” she said.
Both divers will return to the springboard on Thursday, August 8, to compete in the semifinals and be among the top 12 who will advance to the fight for the medals.
I am in an Olympic final; I will enjoy it and do what I know how to do: Alejandra Estudillo
After passing the semi-final round, national team member Alejandra Estudillo Torres, was among the top five exponents in the women's individual 3-meter springboard event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which placed her in the competition for medals.
The diver ranked fifth with 317.05 points after five rounds completed, which is why she has a dream Olympic debut after qualifying for the final among the 12 best divers in the world, below powerhouses such as China and Australia.
“I was a completely different person, a little more confident, with more security. I am very happy and I enjoyed every dive, every moment. Normally, I don't look back to see where I am, I trust in myself and in my dives. I am in an Olympic final and that is what remains to be done, to enjoy it and do what I know how to do," she said.
Alejandra Estudillo shared that the key has been to go one step at a time to reach the goal without stopping enjoying the moment, which, she explained, adds experience to competing against the best divers in the world.
"It is a step by step, yesterday it was to go to the semifinal, now it is the final, and thank God it happened; I will continue enjoying every moment. Every part of being here is a tough competition, but I try to learn from everything, from them, from all the competitors, I think they are great," she said.
"I know there is a possibility, everything is a process, you have to live it. The only thing I want is to enjoy my competition, to give my best effort; if it happens, great, and if not, it is also to learn from everything and I am very calm, I am very happy," she added.
The young diver, making her debut at Paris 2024, will return to the diving board at the Aquatic Center this Friday, August 9, to go in search of the medal, which she will compete against against 11 rivals at 7:00 a.m. Central Mexico time.
In Olympic debut, Alejandra Estudillo advances to the individual springboard final at Paris 2024
The diver Alejandra Estudillo qualified this Thursday for the grand final in the individual springboard event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, after placing fifth in the semifinal round with a score of 317.05 points, so she will have the opportunity to return this Friday to the Aquatic Center of the French capital to compete for the medals.
Estudillo Torres, barely 19 years old, is making her debut in the summer competitions in Paris and after advancing in the preliminary round in 17th place out of 18 possible with a cumulative score of 276.45 points, she gained confidence regarding her performance on an Olympic stage to place herself among the best five competitors with a view to the final.
The semifinals were led by China's Yiwu Chen, with 360.85 points, followed by Australia's Maddison Keeney, with 334.70 points, as well as Italy's Chiara Pellacani, with 324.75 and also China's Yani Chang, with 320.15.
Meanwhile, Mexican Aranza Vázquez, who was poised to fight for the top of the general table after advancing to third place in the preliminary round, had the most unfortunate moment of the competition when she failed her fourth execution, two and a half reverse turns in B, landing with her back in the water when entering the pool, which caused her to score 0 and thus remove her from any possibility of advancing to the final.
The competition for the medals will be this Friday at 7:00 AM, Central Mexico time.
