Mexican Divers Orozco and Agúndez Dive into Olympic Final
Mexican divers Alejandra Orozco and Gabriela Agúndez qualified for the women's platform diving final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Orozco placed fifth, while Agúndez finished ninth in the semifinals. Both athletes overcame challenges to secure their spots in the final round.
Mexican divers Alejandra Orozco and Gabriela Agúndez qualified for the medals in the individual platform event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, after placing fifth and ninth in the semifinal round of the event held at the Aquatic Center of the French capital, with scores of 312.00 and 295.00 points respectively.
On her way to the podium among the best 12 exponents of the specialty, Orozco overcame an adverse first round by leaving partial scores of 54.00 (107B), 62.40 (6243D), 67.20 (407C), 64.40 (305C) and 64.00 (5253B) and placing among the first five divers in the competition.
For her part, Agúndez was out of the qualification zone in two of the five series of the semifinal, after putting her pass at risk due to an execution in which she lost her vertical when entering the water while doing the two and a halfback flips in position C, a situation that she managed to reverse to advance to the final.
The classification was headed by the Chinese Hongchan Quan, with 421.05 points, followed by her compatriot Yuxi Chen, with 403.05 units, as well as the British Andrea Spendolini, with 367.00 points, while the North Korean Kim Mi Rae remained in fourth position, with 32.40.
During the morning session, both Orozco and Agúndez made it through the first competitive cut among the best 18 jumpers in the preliminary round, in which they placed fourth and sixth, awaiting the definition of the test, which is scheduled for this Tuesday at 7:00 am, Central Mexico time.
