Arnulfo Aquino Casas, a prominent figure in Mexican contemporary graphic art and a dedicated advocate for political and socially engaged art, has passed away at the age of 82. Mr. Aquino died of a heart attack in San Francisco Tutla, Oaxaca, his home state, on March 4, 2025.
A master engraver, designer, and educator, Mr. Aquino’s career spanned decades, marked by a commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking techniques while addressing the pressing social and political issues of his time. He was particularly known for his association with Grupo Mira, an influential collective of artists active from 1977 to 1982, which sought to redefine political art in Mexico, moving away from established clichés and engaging directly with the struggles and intellectual currents of the era.
