Mexican Shooting Duo Falls Short of Medal
Mexican shooting duo Zumaya and Ramírez narrowly miss an Olympic medal, finishing 7th in 10m air rifle. Teammate Zavala debuts, placing 17th in 10m air pistol. Mexico aims for podium in upcoming 25m pistol event.
The national sports shooting teams, Goretti Zumaya and Edson Ramírez, finished in seventh place in the 10-meter air rifle classification and were close to competing for a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Mexican duo achieved a total of 628.6 points, the result of Zumaya's 314.1 and Ramírez's 314.5, who did not shrink from top-level rivals.
Zumaya and Ramírez were only 1.1 points behind the Germans Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich, who took fourth place and will fight for the bronze medal against Islam Satpayev and Alexandra Le, from Kazakhstan.
Chinese Yuting Huang and Lihao Sheng will shoot for gold against Jihyeon Keum and Hajun Par, from South Korea.
Alejandra Zavala makes her debut in her third Olympic Games
The Olympian in London 2012 and Rio 2016, Alejandra Zavala, made her debut in sport shooting at Paris 2024 with the qualifying round of the 10-meter air pistol, a test in which she added 573 points that gave her 17th position overall.
The competition system in the French capital dictates that only the first eight classified would advance to the next phase, so the Mexican was left out of the possibility of competing for the medals in this modality.
The champion at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, an event in which she obtained the ticket to Paris 2024, will have her revenge on August 2, date on which she will face the 25-meter pistol qualifier.
In addition to Zavala's participation, Mexico was also represented in sport shooting by Goretti Zumaya and Edson Ramírez, who competed in mixed team action in the 10-meter air rifle and were 1.1 points away from competing for Olympic bronze.
