Mexican Volleybelles Serve Up Success
Mexico's volleyball teams are shining on the international stage. The senior women's team is off to a strong start at the NORCECA Pan American Cup, while the U-17 squad has advanced to the round of 16 at the World Championship.
The Mexican senior indoor volleyball team made a good start at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) Women's Pan American Cup, after defeating Suriname in straight sets (25-6, 25-12 and 25-10) in their first group stage match.
Thanks to this categorical victory, the team led by Italian Nicola Negro took the lead in Group A, which they share with Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Canada and the team they beat in their opening match.
“We are coming in strong. Regardless of the opponent, we will maintain our strength and try to execute our game plan without introducing new elements. Our goal was to win the match 3-0 and as quickly as possible. It will be more difficult against the Dominican Republic, but today Peru beat them, so anything can happen,” said Aztec captain Jocelyn Urías after the match.
The event takes place simultaneously in León (Group A) and Irapuato (Group B), awarding points for the world ranking, in addition to being a qualifier for the Pan American Cup and Continental Championship, both to be held in 2025, as well as for the 2027 Pan American Games.
Mexico advances to the round of 16 in the U-17 Women's Indoor Volleyball World Championship
With two wins and one loss in the group stage, Mexico qualified for the round of 16 of the U-17 Women's Indoor Volleyball World Championship, held in Lima, Peru, the inaugural World Cup for this category.
The current champions of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (NORCECA) debuted with a surprising defeat against Italy, as they won the first two sets (25-19 and 25-17), but then fell in the next three (14-25, 19-25 and 10-15) so that the final score was 3-2 for the Europeans.
Despite the hard setback, the Aztec volleyball players did not lose focus and defeated Argentina in their second match 3-0 (25-22, 25-22 and 25-19), the same score by which they left the representative of Egypt lying in the last duel of the group phase thanks to partial scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-13.
In this way, Mexico added a total of six points and took second place in Group C, while Italy did the same with eight points to secure the leadership of that sector.
The Aztec team will play the round of 16 tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (Central Mexico time) against the third-place team in Group A, which will be contested between Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Canada, as Brazil is on track to take first place in that group.
