Mexico's tourism sector is experiencing a significant resurgence, with international tourist arrivals surpassing even pre-pandemic levels, according to data released by the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur). The head of Sectur, Miguel Torruco Marqués, highlighted the remarkable growth, emphasizing the positive impact on local economies and the fulfillment of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's vision to leverage tourism as a tool for social reconciliation.
The statistics, sourced from the Migratory Policy Unit-Registration and Identity of Persons of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), reveal a substantial increase in international tourist arrivals during the January-October 2023 period. This surge exceeded the figures recorded in the same timeframe in 2019 by an impressive 13.8%, with 16.7 million international tourists registering their presence.
U.S., Canada, and Colombia
The United States, Canada, and Colombia emerged as the primary contributors to this surge, collectively accounting for 13.46 million tourists. This marks a 7% increase compared to the first ten months of 2022 and a substantial 23.8% jump from the same period in 2019. Torruco Marqués specifically pointed out the robust performance of U.S. tourist arrivals, reaching 11.02 million, a 3.4% increase from 2022 and an impressive 27.9% surge compared to 2019.
Canada also played a pivotal role, with 1.83 million tourists arriving via air during the January-October 2023 period. This represents a remarkable 51.6% increase from 2022 and a 3.8% growth compared to 2019. Colombian tourist arrivals saw a surge of 23.9%, totaling 604,468 during the same period, outpacing the figures from 2019.
Airport Hubs Witnessing Record Numbers
Cancun, Mexico City International Airport (AICM), and Los Cabos emerged as the top airport hubs, collectively hosting 13.54 million international tourists. This reflects a 4.4% increase compared to the first ten months of 2022 and a robust 12.4% growth compared to 2019.
Cancun, in particular, stood out with 8.16 million international tourists, a 5% increase from 2022. AICM and Los Cabos also experienced positive growth, with 3.5 million and 1.88 million international tourists, respectively, during the January-October 2023 period.
Economic Benefits and Social Reconciliation
The surge in tourism activity is contributing to economic growth and aligns with President López Obrador's directive to make tourism a tool for social reconciliation. The influx of international visitors generates economic benefits for local communities, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the country.
Mexico's tourism sector is not only bouncing back from the challenges posed by the pandemic but is thriving, reaching unprecedented levels. The sector's resilience and growth serve as a testament to the country's appeal as a top tourist destination and its commitment to leveraging tourism for broader economic and social benefits.
