Mezcal and Stand-Up Comedy Come Together in Durango

The second annual Mezcal Stand Up Fest brings over 30 comedians and plenty of mezcal to Durango.

What happens when you mix Mexico's most iconic agave spirit with a bunch of comedians looking for a crowd? You get the Mezcal Stand Up Fest, and it is back for its second year in Durango this Saturday.

The festival takes over the CMIC Auditorium on June 6 starting at 5:00 PM, bringing together more than 30 comedians from Durango and across Mexico for an evening of laughs, local food and plenty of mezcal. The combination is as natural as it sounds: good drinks and good comedy have always gone together, and in Durango they have turned it into a full-fledged festival that attracts crowds from across the region.

"We are very happy because this edition of the Mezcal Stand Up Fest is our second edition and it revolves around this drink because it is something that is part of our identity as Duranguenses," said Adan Retana, one of the hosts and participating comedians. "It is strong and the experiences are different."

The lineup is packed with local and national talent. Names like Luiki Wiki (the main host, who has grown a massive social media following with millions of views across platforms), Alex Peligro, Johnny Munster, Chikirriki, Exmariachi, Vale Madre and Werillo Mamon will take the stage. In total, 36 comedians are listed, ranging from established names with national recognition to newcomers testing their material for the first time in front of a live audience.

"This edition is a golden opportunity for our comedians to shine," Retana said. "Compared to the first edition, there has been considerable improvement in terms of attendance. We have much more participation from comedians and that motivates us to keep going."

The space is open for comedians, rappers, poets and anyone brave enough to jump on stage and try out a routine. Expect everything from polished stand-up sets to improvised jokes, spoken word performances and whatever spontaneous material comes to mind during the evening. The inclusive open-mic style format means you never know quite what might happen next, which is part of the festival's unique charm and keeps audiences coming back for more every year.

Durango has been quietly building its comedy and performing arts scene and events like this give local talent a platform to grow and reach new audiences. The Mezcal Stand Up Fest is part of a broader cultural push in the state, which is known for its mezcal production, beautiful colonial architecture and outdoor adventure tourism in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. The state has been working to position itself as a destination for cultural tourism beyond its traditional attractions in northern Mexico.

Tickets are 150 pesos in presale and available online through ticketmax.com.mx or in person at Cafe Marfil and Teslacel locations. At that price it is one of the best entertainment deals in the city. The festival is expected to run late into the night with multiple rounds of performances from comedians rotating through the lineup throughout the evening.

For visitors to Durango, the festival offers a taste of local culture that goes beyond typical attractions. The city is worth exploring for its mezcal distilleries where you can see traditional production methods passed down through generations, the Paseo de la Alameda for an evening walk and the nearby mountains for hiking and outdoor activities. Adding a comedy show with local mezcal to your itinerary makes for a memorable weekend in one of Mexico's most overlooked and underrated destinations for cultural travelers seeking something different.
