Playa del Carmen Bets on Culture as New Museum Takes Shape
Playa del Carmen will transform its former municipal palace into the "Centro Cultural y Museo 28 de Julio." The project aims to boost cultural identity and tourism, with IMCAS managing the space under a 99-year lease.

In a move aimed at bolstering its cultural identity and enriching its tourism offerings, the popular resort city of Playa del Carmen is set to establish a new cultural center and museum in its former municipal palace. The initiative, spearheaded by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, received unanimous approval from the city council last December and is now advancing with the support of federal authorities.
The project, officially named the "Centro Cultural y Museo 28 de Julio," will repurpose the historic former city hall building into a dedicated space for cultural and artistic activities, as well as the promotion of the municipality's historical heritage. The announcement came as Ms. Mercado convened a working meeting with federal officials to ensure the technical, legal, and financial viability of the ambitious undertaking.
"We are initiating the process to transform our former Municipal Palace into the 'Centro Cultural y Museo 28 de Julio,' a space that will celebrate our identity and enrich our tourism offerings," Ms. Mercado stated, underscoring the strategic importance of the project for the ongoing transformation of Playa del Carmen. She emphasized that culture is a right, not a privilege, and celebrated this "historic step" in strengthening the city's cultural landscape.
The cultural center will be administered by the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts (IMCAS) under a 99-year lease agreement, signaling a long-term commitment to the project. Ms. Mercado lauded the tireless work, dedication, and commitment of Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, the general director of IMCAS, in bringing this vision to fruition.
The official visit with federal authorities included discussions with key figures such as Arturo Gómez Martínez, Deputy Director of Ethnography at the National Museum of Anthropology and History; Lluvia Alejandra Sepúlveda Jiménez, General Director of Cultural Formation and Management at the Ministry of Culture of Mexico; Fritz Glockner Corte, General Director of the Educal Bookstore Network; and Yokoyani Sánchez Almada Montaño, Head of the Office of the Directorate of Operation and Integral Projects of Fonart. Their involvement underscores the collaborative effort between local and federal entities to ensure the success of the cultural center.
Ms. Mercado reiterated her administration's commitment to bringing culture to all corners of the municipality, stating, "We will continue building together a more cultural and vibrant Playa del Carmen." The exclusive use of the building for cultural, artistic, and heritage promotion activities aims to create a focal point for both residents and visitors, further enhancing the city's appeal as a multifaceted destination.
The establishment of the "Centro Cultural y Museo 28 de Julio" reflects a broader trend among tourism-dependent regions seeking to diversify their offerings and cultivate a stronger sense of local identity. By investing in cultural infrastructure, Playa del Carmen aims to not only attract a wider range of visitors but also to provide its residents with greater access to arts and heritage, fostering a more vibrant and engaged community. The long-term lease agreement provides a stable foundation for the center's operations, ensuring its role as a cultural anchor in the city for decades to come.
