Reinoso Rallies to Reach Kayak Cross Round of 16
Mexican kayaker Sofía Reinoso Díaz-Barriga qualifies for the kayak cross round of 16 after a dramatic race. Despite a collision, a penalty for her opponent secured her second place finish. Reinoso will compete in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
The national canoe slalom team member, Sofía Reinoso Díaz-Barriga, earned her ticket to the series (round of 16) in the kayak cross event, after finishing in second place in race 11, round 1, which took place at the Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Reinoso, who placed 34th in the time trial classification, faced Corinna Kuhnle from Austria, Antonie Galuskova from the Czech Republic, and Chu-Han Chang from Chinese Taipei in her group.
Only the first two in each of the 11 races that were contested earned their ticket to the next stage, while the rest will compete for a spot in the second round that will take place this Saturday.
Sofía Reinoso started the course well and immediately placed second, but Chu-Han Chang crashed into her boat twice, which led her to finish the course in third place, behind Austria and the Czech Republic. At the end of the race, the judges reported that the Austrian committed three faults for which she was punished and finished in fourth place, giving the Mexican, who made a clean course, second place.
The athlete from Puebla, who faces her second Olympic appointment, after her time in Tokyo 2020, will seek her pass to the quarterfinals, in the heat stage that will take place on Sunday, August 4, at 8:45 a.m., Central Mexico time.
