The government of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo will assume the security and control of the Playa del Carmen police after the armed attack on a bar that left one dead and 11 wounded. Governor Carlos Joaquín González announced that the control of the local police will be assumed before the "emergency" situation that is experienced in this area of the Mexican Caribbean that includes Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and a large part of the Riviera Maya.
So far this year there have been 87 murders related to the dispute that organized crime groups maintain for the control of this area. The most notorious attacks have taken place in bars and nightclubs and only one person died on Monday and eleven more were wounded when two strangers opened fire on the customers of the place to claim the so-called floor charge.
In a press conference, accompanied by the Secretary of Public Security, Alberto Capella, Governor Carlos Joaquin acknowledged that the security situation in the area is already an "emergency". He announced the immediate installation of technology that allows for a quicker response to violent acts, as well as the cleaning and restructuring of the security corporations in this area. The governor warned that local police who do not accept the orders of the Ministry of Public Security may be subject to administrative and even criminal measures.
Video of the attack at the Playa del Carmen brewery
The armed attack on customers of a "Chapultepec" brewery in Playa del Carmen was recorded by surveillance cameras. The video has already been revealed and has been disseminated on social networks, while ministerial police and prosecutors are analyzing it. The attack occurred on Monday, May 14 at 9:32 pm, in the ejido colony of the solidarity municipality, charged the life of one person and left 11 injured. The surveillance video shows how two people approached the establishment calmly, in front of the door they took out their weapons: one fired towards the interior, while the other shot at customers who were outside the place.
More than a thousand soldiers will strengthen security in Cancun and Playa del Carmen
Some 1,100 military personnel will reinforce security in the resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen after both places have seen an increase in violence in recent weeks, Mexican Army Commander Miguel Angel Huerta Ceballos said Tuesday. He said that the main objective of the strategy will be to protect citizenship, so that surveillance will be strengthened in commercial plazas, where robberies are more constant, as well as in construction works and in general in places where the flow of people is older.
"This security strategy is because the northern area of Quintana Roo is within the 17 regional coordinators that have the highest incidence of crime," explained Huerta Ceballos during the commemoration of the 106th anniversary of the Mexican Army. The military explained that in the so-called "Operation Cancun" 500 military agents work, who are relieved in three shifts during the 24 hours, in addition to the regional coordination that contributes 600 more elements.
In the act, the head of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) in Quintana Roo, Jesus Alberto Capella, acknowledged that the results in terms of security "are not enough although there are advances." The main priority, he said, is to achieve an interinstitutional articulation that had not been had, hence seeking to standardize the state's security strategy in the municipalities.
Capello lamented the institutional neglect of two decades and that the consumption of drugs was not taken care of by the authorities of the three levels of government." Seven criminal groups operating in regions of Mexico have found a huge paradise in Quintana Roo, that challenge we will achieve in an articulated way, the state with the 11 municipalities," he said.
Meanwhile, the governor of the entity, Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, explained that to date 420 security cameras have been installed and there is a 20% advance in the construction of the Security Center where a video surveillance system will be installed. In the state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, violence has spread throughout this year due to an alleged dispute between the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel and Los Zetas and other criminal groups to control the region.
