Why Soil Matters More Than You Think
Soil: not just dirt! Vital for food, water, and fighting climate change, says UNAM expert. Over-farming and deforestation are killing it. We need to cherish soil or face a planet-sized disaster.
Let’s talk about dirt. Yes, dirt. That brown stuff under your feet that you probably only think about when it’s caked on your boots or splattered across your car after a particularly mucky day. But here’s the thing: dirt—or soil, as the experts insist on calling it—is a bit of a big deal. In fact, it might just be the most important thing you’ve never thought about.
Don’t believe me? Well, let me tell you about Felipe García Oliva, an academic from the Institute of Ecosystem and Sustainability Research at UNAM. He’s the sort of chap who probably spends more time staring at soil samples than most of us spend staring at our phones. And according to him, soil is doing more to save the planet than half the politicians in the world put together.
