Yucatan's Capital Builds on Cultural Allure with Second Phase of Art District
Merida's Arts District expands with a $67M investment, adding commercial space, a hotel, and a park, aiming to boost the city's economy and culture.

A $67 million expansion is underway in Mérida's burgeoning Arts District, signaling strong investor confidence in the Yucatan Peninsula's economic and cultural development. The project, spearheaded by Grupo López-Rosa, will add a significant 10,000 square meters of commercial space, a 120-room hotel under IHG's Voco brand, and a one-hectare public park to the district.
The expansion's groundbreaking, marked by a symbolic laying of the first stone by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, underscores the project's ambition to transform the northern part of Mérida into a cultural and economic hub. "The initiative combines private investment with social development, boosting the growth of Mérida," Díaz Mena stated, highlighting the project's dual focus on economic development and community enrichment. "With this advance, the complex is shaping up as a pole of innovation and art in the region with a total investment of more than 82 million pesos."
The project is expected to create over 350 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy. Grupo López-Rosa President Gianni Rosa emphasized the strategic vision behind the expansion, stating, "The construction of the new building aims to consolidate the area as a world-class business and tourism center." The inclusion of a Voco hotel, a brand known for its distinctive style and focus on local experiences, is expected to attract both business and leisure travelers.
A key component of the expansion is the creation of a one-hectare public park, financed and maintained through private capital. This green space will offer recreational and leisure opportunities for local families, reinforcing the project's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Mérida's residents. "The public park of one hectare, which will be financed and maintained with private capital, will offer a place of recreation and leisure for Yucatecan families, reaffirming the commitment to the quality of life of citizens," the project's statement read.
Furthermore, the development will include a dedicated cultural space for exhibitions, events, and artistic activities. This space is envisioned as a platform for local businesses and artisans to showcase their work, providing them with new avenues for growth. "The development also includes the creation of a cultural space where residents and tourists can enjoy exhibitions, events and artistic activities, which represents a great opportunity for local businesses and artisans, who will benefit from the new commercial spaces," the project's statement noted.
The expansion is seen as a significant step in bolstering Mérida's tourism and commercial infrastructure, positioning the city as a modern, vibrant, and attractive destination for investors, artists, and tourists. "With this new phase, the city's tourism and commercial infrastructure is strengthened, consolidating Mérida as a modern, vibrant and attractive city for investors, artists and tourists, positioning itself as a benchmark for orderly and sustainable development in southeastern Mexico," the project's statement emphasized.
Gianni Rosa also provided updates on the project's timeline, noting that the first phase, with an investment of $15 million, is nearing completion and is expected to open to the public in May. However, the hotel and commercial center are slated for completion in September 2026. "Gianni mentioned that the first phase, with an investment of 15 million dollars and which began at the end of 2024, may be inaugurated next May because they are working hard to open it to the public, however, both the hotel and the shopping center can be enjoyed in September 2026," the project's statement detailed.
The substantial investment in Mérida's Arts District reflects a broader trend of economic growth and cultural development in the Yucatan Peninsula. The region is increasingly attracting attention from both domestic and international investors, drawn by its rich cultural heritage, strategic location, and growing infrastructure. As Mérida continues to evolve into a hub for art, culture, and commerce, the Arts District expansion stands as a testament to the city's potential and its commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth.
