July 9 was a Tuesday.

The hearing was scheduled for ten in the morning. Courtroom 4, Toluca. The press was there. The cameras were there. The public was there — a crowd of people who had never met Sandra Morales but had opinions about her anyway, because that is what a small-town scandal becomes when it hits the national news.

Maribel arrived at eight. She had the case file. She had the bank records. She had Raúl's confession, notarized and signed. She had everything she needed except the defendant.

"Where is she?" her boss asked.

"I don't know."

"You're supposed to know. You're prosecuting her."

"I'm prosecuting the simulation of a kidnapping. I don't need her in the courtroom to do that."

"Technically, you don't. Politically, you do. The governor wants a conviction. A conviction in absentia looks weak."

"Then he should have found her before I did."

Her boss looked at her. He was a man who had been in government long enough to know when to argue and when to let things go. This was a letting-things-go moment. He walked away.

Maribel sat at the prosecutor's table and waited.

Karla arrived at nine. She took a seat in the gallery, third row, on the aisle. She had her notebook. She had her phone. She had her source in the prosecutor's office who had told her, off the record, that the case was solid, that the confession was clean, that Sandra would be convicted even if she never set foot in a courtroom again.

Karla had written the story that made this hearing possible. She had published before the official version could harden. She had forced the state to act. She did not feel proud. At nine-thirty, Sandra was in a car on the highway to Veracruz.

She found a bus station. She had no money. She had no phone. She had the clothes she was wearing and a head full of plans.

She found a truck in the parking lot, keys in the ignition. A delivery truck, full of flowers. Tenancingo flowers — gladiolas and marigolds and lilies. She got in. She drove.

She did not know where she was going. East. That was all she knew. East, toward the coast, toward a place where no one knew her name.

She drove for an hour before she realized the truck was almost out of gas.


At ten o'clock, the judge called the court to order.

The case was presented. Maribel laid out the evidence clearly, cleanly, the way she had done a hundred times before. The bank records showed the account opened by Raúl Morales. The phone records showed the ransom call made from a burner registered to the same account. The video showed Sandra reading lines. The confession showed the rest.

The defense attorney — appointed by the state, paid by the hour, already thinking about lunch — argued that Sandra was a victim who had been coerced into the simulation by the same people who had kidnapped her. He argued that she was not a criminal but a hostage. He argued that the real perpetrators were still out there.

He did not name Pedro Álvarez.

He did not say the words El Mínimo.

No one in that courtroom was surprised.

At eleven-thirty, the judge delivered the verdict. Guilty. Simulation of kidnapping. Embezzlement of public funds. Sentencing reserved — the court would reconvene in thirty days to determine the appropriate penalty.

Sandra Morales was convicted.

The truck ran out of gas on the highway between Puebla and Veracruz.

Sandra pulled over. She sat in the driver's seat with the flowers in the back, the smell of gladiolas filling the cab, and she thought about what to do next.

She got out of the truck.

The highway was empty. The sun was high. The mountains of Puebla rose in the distance, green and patient.

She started walking.


Karla found Maribel in the parking lot after the hearing.

"You did it," Karla said.

"I did my job."

"She's gone. The cartel has her. She's probably dead by now."

"Probably."

"And you're okay with that?"

Maribel turned. She looked at Karla. Her face was tired and old and honest.

"No," she said. "I'm not okay with it. But I've been a prosecutor for twelve years. I've put away eighteen cartel members. Eleven kidnappers. Dozens of traffickers. And you know how many of them are still in prison? Three. The rest are out. Witnesses disappeared. Judges were bought. Cases were dismissed. This is the system. It doesn't punish the powerful. It processes the weak."

"So what do we do?"

"We keep going. We keep filing cases. We keep putting pressure on. We keep believing that one day, the crack in the system will be wide enough for the truth to fall through."

"And until then?"

Maribel got into her car.

"Until then, we write the stories that keep people from forgetting."

She closed the door. She drove away.

Karla stood in the parking lot with her notebook in her hand.


Selena found her mother.

It took her a week. She walked from Chalco to Mexico City. She found a shelter for migrants near the central bus station. She told them she was from Chiapas. They gave her a bed and a meal and a list of bus schedules. She used the shelter's phone to call the number she remembered — the number she had dialed from the pink house, the number she had dialed from the pay phone in Chalco.

This time, she spoke.

"Mamá," she said. "Soy yo."

There was silence. Then a sound. A sound that Selena had not heard in three years. Her mother crying.

"Where are you?"

"Mexico City. I'm coming home."

"How?"

"I'll send it. Tell me where."

Selena told her. She hung up. She sat on the bed in the shelter and waited.

Three days later, the money arrived. Enough for a ticket to Chiapas and a little extra for food on the way. Selena bought the ticket. She boarded the bus. She watched Mexico City shrink in the window.

She thought about the pink house. She thought about the girl she had called Mariposa, somewhere in the city, starting her own journey. She thought about the woman in the window in Chalco, the one whose kidnapping had bought her five minutes of an unlocked door.

She did not know what happened to that woman. She did not know if she was alive or dead. She knew only that she had seen her face for one second on a dark street, and that one second had told her something she needed to know: that survival is not noble. It is not a choice. It is a door that opens for five minutes and you go through it or you do not, and either way, the world keeps turning.

The bus crossed into Chiapas.

She wrote about the system that allowed it all to happen — a system where a mayor could steal forty million pesos, where a cartel boss could run a trafficking network from a flower warehouse, where a town could know everything and say nothing, because the flowers were beautiful and the soil was rich and the silence was how everyone survived.

She finished at three in the morning.

She read it once.

She filed it.

She went to sleep for the first time in a week.


In a motel on the highway to Veracruz, Sandra watched the news.

Her own face. The verdict. The sentencing date. She was officially a fugitive now. Wanted by the state. Wanted by the cartel. Wanted by everyone.

She cut her hair in the bathroom sink. She used a pair of scissors from the motel's lost-and-found. She cut it short, the way she had worn it in college, before she was anyone's wife or anyone's mayor or anyone's criminal.

She looked at herself in the mirror.

She did not recognize the woman looking back. That woman was thinner. Harder. Her eyes were different. They had seen things they could not unsee.

She put on clothes she had stolen from a laundry line behind the motel. Cheap clothes. A man's shirt. Jeans that were too big. She left her own clothes in a pile on the bathroom floor.

She walked out of the motel at dawn.

The highway was quiet. The sun was coming up over the mountains. She started walking east.

She did not know where she was going. She did not have a plan. She did not have money or a phone or a name that was safe to use.

She had her feet, and the road, and the morning.

She walked.

Selena stops. She stands in the street. She opens her mouth to say something, but the word is too heavy, and she has not carried it in three years.

"Mamá," she says.

The woman on the porch drops the bowl.

She says yes.

She looks at him. A farmer. Old. Wearing a hat. No malice in his face.

"Sí," she says.

She gets in.

The truck drives east, toward the coast, toward the water.

Tenancingo is behind her.

The flowers are still growing.
