The Disappearance of Sandra M. , Episode 3: The Chiapas Girl

She had a name once, but she stopped using it on the day the men came for her family.

She had a name once, but she stopped using it.

It happened slowly. First, the men stopped using it. Then the other girls stopped using it. Then she stopped thinking it when she looked in the mirror. The name was a piece of paper that had been folded so many times the creases had worn through, until eventually you unfolded it and there was nothing left.

She was La Misma now. The same one. The one who had been in the pink house the longest. The one who did not cry anymore. The one who watched.

She had been sixteen when they took her. Three years ago. A man in her village in Chiapas had offered her a job at a factory in Mexico City. He had shown her a photograph of the factory — a clean white building with buses out front and women in blue uniforms smiling. He had said she could send money home to her mother and save enough to go to school in two years. She had believed him because she was sixteen and because Chiapas is a place where hope is the only luxury the poor can afford, and because the man was from her village and she knew his family and she thought that meant something.

It did not mean anything.

The bus from Chiapas did not go to Mexico City. It went to Tenancingo. The factory did not exist. The clean white building in the photograph was a flower warehouse. The women in blue uniforms were girls like her, waiting to be moved.

She had been moved three times in three years. Each time, she had been told it was the last move. Each time, she had been told the next place would be better. Each time, it was a smaller room with a smaller window and a lock on the outside of the door.

The pink house was the fourth place. She had been there for eleven months. It was not better. But she had learned the schedule.


The night of the mayor's kidnapping, everything changed.

La Misma felt it before she saw it. The energy in the house shifted. The guards were nervous. They made mistakes — left doors unlocked, forgot to check the back room, spoke too loudly on the phone. She heard fragments of conversations. The mayor. The money. El Mínimo.

She did not know what it meant. She did not care. What she cared about was the door.

The door to the backyard was unlocked. She had seen it when the guard came in from his smoke break. He had forgotten to lock it behind him. She had watched him walk past her room, past the kitchen, into the front of the house where the other men were talking. She had waited. She had counted to sixty. He had not come back.

She stood.

She walked to the door.

She opened it.

The backyard was dark. The moon was new. She could see the shapes of things — a water tank, a clothesline, a wall at the end of the yard. Beyond the wall, the flower fields. Beyond the flower fields, the highway.

She took a step.

Then another.

Then she heard the footsteps.

She turned. A girl was standing in the doorway. Young. Maybe fourteen. She had been in the house for two weeks. She had not spoken since she arrived. Her name was something La Misma did not know.

The girl looked at her. She looked at the open door. She looked at the darkness beyond the wall.

She did not say anything.

She stepped forward.

They ran.


The tunnel was not a tunnel. It was a drainage culvert, wide enough for a person to crawl through, running beneath the flower fields from the pink house to the edge of town. La Misma had found it months ago, when a guard had mentioned it during a phone call, not knowing she was listening. She had memorized the entrance — a rusted grate behind the water tank, hidden by weeds.

They reached it in less than a minute.

The grate was still there. She pulled it. It did not move. She pulled harder. The rust had sealed it to the concrete. The younger girl watched, silent, her breath coming in short gasps.

"Help me," La Misma whispered.

The girl did not move.

"Help me or we're dead."

The girl knelt. Together, they pulled. The grate shifted. They pulled again. It opened, just enough. The hole was narrow. La Misma went first.

The culvert was dark and wet. Water came up to her ankles. The smell was old water and mud and something chemical she did not recognize. She crawled forward, feeling the walls with her hands, trying not to think about what else might live in the dark.

Behind her, she heard the girl follow.

They crawled for what felt like an hour. It was probably ten minutes. Time moved differently in the dark. La Misma kept her eyes on the small circle of light ahead — the other end, the edge of town, the highway.

The light grew.

They reached the end.

The culvert opened into a ditch beside the highway. La Misma pulled herself out. The girl followed. They stood in the ditch, covered in mud and water, breathing hard, looking at the road.

Tenancingo was behind them. The flower fields stretched on either side. Ahead, the highway led to Toluca, and Toluca led to Mexico City, and Mexico City led everywhere.

"Where are we going?" the girl said.

La Misma looked at her. It was the first time she had heard her speak.

"I don't know," she said.

They started walking.


They walked for two hours.

The highway was empty. No cars. No lights. Just the road and the fields and the sky. The girl followed La Misma without asking questions. She did not ask where they were going. She did not ask what they would do when they got there. She just walked, her small feet in shoes that were too big, her eyes on the ground.

At dawn, they reached the edge of a town. La Misma did not know its name. A gas station. A church. A row of houses with their curtains drawn. She found a tap behind the gas station and washed the mud from her arms and face. The girl did the same.

"Are we safe?" the girl said.

"No."

"But we're away from the pink house."

"We're away from the pink house. That doesn't mean we're safe."

"Then why did we run?"

La Misma looked at her. The girl was young enough that she still believed in questions with answers. She was young enough that she still believed the world made sense.

"Because the guards were distracted," La Misma said. "Because the mayor's kidnapping meant they forgot about us. Because sometimes the only chance you get is a door that's unlocked for five minutes, and if you don't take it, it never comes again."

"What kidnapping?"

"The mayor of Tenancingo. She was taken last night. Forty million pesos. It's all over the news."

"I don't know what the news is."

"I know."

They sat behind the gas station and watched the sun rise over fields she did not recognize.


They found a truck.

A pickup, parked behind a mechanic's shop, keys under the mat. La Misma did not think about it. She opened the door, started the engine, and drove. The girl sat beside her, watching the road.

"Where did you learn to drive?" the girl said.

"I watched."

"You watched people drive?"

"I watched everything."

The truck had a quarter tank of gas. La Misma drove east, away from Tenancingo, away from the flower fields, away from everything she knew. She did not have a plan. She had never had a plan. She had survived for three years by paying attention and not making noise, and now she was driving a stolen truck toward a city she had never seen, with a girl whose name she still did not know.

"What's your name?" she said.

The girl was quiet for a long time.

"I don't remember," she said.

"Try."

"It was something my mother called me. But it's been two years. I don't know if I'm that girl anymore."

La Misma understood. She understood completely.

"I'll call you Mariposa," she said. "Because you came out of the dark."

The girl almost smiled.


They made it to Chalco by evening.

The truck ran out of gas on the outskirts, on a street lined with auto repair shops and tire stores and small houses painted in bright colors. La Misma parked it on the shoulder and took the girl's hand and walked.

Chalco was a different world from Tenancingo. Bigger. Noisier. More people, more cars, more lights. The buildings were packed together. The streets were crowded. There were vendors on every corner selling tacos and toys and phone chargers.

La Misma had never seen so many people in one place.

She found a phone. A pay phone, rusted, but the dial tone worked. She dialed the only number she remembered. Her mother's number in Chiapas. The number she had called from the pink house once, a year ago, when a guard had let her make a call as a reward for not causing trouble.

The line rang.

A woman answered.

"¿Bueno?"

La Misma opened her mouth. No sound came out.

"¿Bueno? ¿Quién habla?"

She wanted to say her name. She wanted to say It's me, it's your daughter, I'm alive. But her name was gone, folded so many times that the creases had worn through, and she did not know if the woman on the other end of the line would recognize a voice that had not spoken in three years.

The woman hung up.

La Misma held the phone.

Mariposa watched her.

"Was that your mother?" the girl said.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

"Because I don't know how to go home."


They walked through Chalco until they found a bus station.

La Misma counted her money. Eighty-three pesos. Enough for two tickets to somewhere close, but not close enough. Enough for one ticket to somewhere far.

She bought one ticket. To Mexico City. She gave it to Mariposa.

"Take this."

"Where are you going?"

"Somewhere else."

"But I don't know where to go."

"You'll figure it out. You're a mariposa. You came out of the dark."

The girl looked at the ticket. She looked at La Misma.

"What's your name?" she said.

La Misma thought about it. She thought about her mother's voice on the phone. She thought about the girl she had been, before the bus from Chiapas, before the pink house, before she had stopped being a name.

"Selena," she said. "My name is Selena."

The girl hugged her.

Selena stood in the bus station and let herself be held, and then the girl was gone, boarding a bus to Mexico City, and Selena was alone.

She walked.

She walked through the streets of Chalco, past the taco stands and the tire shops and the houses painted blue and yellow and pink. She walked until her feet hurt and then she walked more. She did not know where she was going. She did not know what she was looking for.

She found a house.

A house on a quiet street, with bars on the windows and a light on upstairs. The front door was open. She could see men inside, sitting around a table, talking. They were not police. They were not the men from the pink house. They were something else.

She hid behind a tree and watched.

A car pulled up. Three men got out. They were not the men from the pink house either. But one of them had a tattoo on his neck. The letter M.

She had seen that tattoo before. On the man who visited the pink house once, the man the guards called El Mínimo. Not the same man. But the same tattoo.

She watched as the men went inside. She watched as the door closed behind them.

She stayed. She did not know why. She stayed because the house was the only thing in Chalco that reminded her of the pink house, and the pink house was the only thing she knew, and knowing something, even a bad thing, was better than knowing nothing at all.

She sat behind the tree and watched the light in the upstairs window.

She waited.


Inside the house, two floors above where Selena sat, Sandra Morales was lying on a bed with her eyes open.

She did not know that a girl from Chiapas was watching the house from the street. She did not know that a cousin named Raúl was driving north with a bag of cash. She did not know that Pedro Álvarez was on the phone with a man from Sinaloa, explaining that the forty million pesos had been recovered from the flower business and the bank account and the coffee can.

All she knew was the ceiling above her and the bars on the window and the sound of voices downstairs that she could not understand.

She had been in the Chalco house for two days.

She had not slept.

She had not eaten.

She had thought about Camila. She had thought about Mateo. She had thought about the last time she had said something true to someone she loved, and she could not remember when that was.

The voices downstairs got louder. A door slammed. Footsteps on the stairs.

She sat up.

The door opened.

A man stood in the doorway. Not the man with the scar. A different man. Older. He wore a suit. His shoes were polished. He looked at her the way a man looks at a receipt he is about to throw away.

"Sandra Morales," he said.

"Yes."

"You're coming with me."

"Where?"

"Somewhere else."

He stepped aside. Two men entered the room. They did not speak. They did not look at her. They stood by the door, waiting.

She stood.

She followed them.

She walked down the stairs, through the kitchen, past the table where the men were sitting. They did not look at her either. She was just a package being moved.

At the front door, she stopped.

Through the window, she could see the street. A tree. A girl behind the tree.

The girl was watching the house.

Their eyes met.

For one second, two women looked at each other across a dark street in Chalco — one coming out, one going in, both running from the same town, both carrying the same weight.

Then a hand pushed Sandra forward, and she was in the car, and the car was moving, and Chalco was behind her, and the girl was gone.


Selena watched the car drive away.

She had seen the woman in the window. The mayor. The one whose kidnapping had changed everything. She had seen her face — tired, scared, older than she probably was.

She watched the car disappear.

She stood.

She walked to the house. The front door was still open. She could hear the men inside, laughing, talking, living their lives while other people's lives fell apart around them.

She did not go in.

She walked past the house, down the street, toward the highway.

She did not know where she was going.

But she was walking.

And that was more than she had done in three years.
